If you’ve been to the Fair before, you’re quite likely familiar with the traffic situation. That is, the long line of cars that wends its way along the back roads to the fairgrounds. While the scenery along the drive is beautiful, and spending more time anticipating the sights, smells and sounds of the Fair can build excitement, most of us would prefer having more time at the Fair.
Thankfully, there are ways to reduce your time in the car, traffic on the roads and greenhouse gas emissions from idling engines. Check out the three best ways to get to the Common Ground Country Fair below!
Take the historic train
Take the train to the Fair! Courtesy of the Belfast and Moosehead Lake Railroad, the train runs regularly from Thorndike and Unity to the Common Ground Country Fair. Park for free in Thorndike or Unity and ride the train right to the fairgrounds. The train is great for families or anyone looking to eliminate the long walk or shuttle ride from the parking lots to the gate. You can learn more about this fun transportation option here.
If you plan to take the train to the Fair, you will need to purchase a round-trip train ticket, as well as Common Ground Country Fair tickets.
One train runs from Thorndike (every half hour) and one from Unity (every 45 minutes) as follows: The first Unity train leaves Unity at 8:40 a.m., and the first Thorndike train leaves Thorndike at 8:50 a.m., with arrival at the fairgrounds at 9:05 a.m. The last trains leave the fairgrounds at 6:40 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 5:15 p.m. on Sunday. See complete train schedule here.
Park & Pedal
The number of bikes parked at the Fair has grown steadily, from 150 the first year to more than 600 in recent years. Pedal to the Fair and get a cheerful welcome and first-class bike valet parking, compliments of our wonderful Fair volunteers, as well as a special thank you treat for biking to the Fair.
If you live too far to bike the whole way, drive part way and use one of our Park & Pedal satellite parking areas, which range from three to twelve miles from the Fair. Please refer to the Park & Pedal map for the current list of sites.
Carpool
Consider carpooling with people in your family or friend unit, or visit the 2023 Common Ground Country Fair Group Carpool platform to organize rideshares, reduce traffic and save time, money and energy.
