Organic Orcharding Workshop Series in March and April 2025
The Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA) will hold workshops on fruit tree care — its annual Organic Orcharding Workshop Series — at locations throughout Maine in March and April, 2025. In this series of beginner-level workshops, community members can learn different skills relevant to growing fruit trees at home or in their communities.
Fruit trees — especially apples — abound in Maine gardens and on public land. MOFGA’s educators regularly look forward to teaching these classes, as a way to share knowledge and skills that will help families and communities maximize harvest from their fruit trees, while also reducing the use of toxic pesticides.
“Each year, dozens of people across the state participate in the workshops in MOFGA’s Organic Orcharding Series,” says Madi Whaley, MOFGA’s educational programs coordinator. “We’re happy to support individuals in acquiring skills to care for the fruit trees that feed them, in their homes and communities.”
The workshop series will include three different classes: Workshops on fruit tree pruning will be held in Bethel, Blue Hill, Patten, and Unity (March 8), restoring old fruit trees will be held in Freeport, Hope, and Milton Mills (March 22), and bench grafting — the process of grafting fruit tree scionwood, or clippings, onto rootstock to produce a new tree — will be held in Bethel (April 19).
People interested in these workshops may also be interested in attending MOFGA’s Pruning Berry Bushes workshop on March 29, the Seed Swap & Scion Exchange on March 30, and classes in MOFGA’s Gardening in Climate Change webinar series.
