The public is encouraged to join MOFGA to celebrate a belated Earth Day with a spring cleanup at MOFGA’s Common Ground Education Center in Unity, Maine, on Saturday, April 27, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
During this annual event, participants will spend time volunteering on campus to help MOFGA in supporting organic farmers and gardeners. Participants may find themselves tidying the grounds to get ready for the upcoming growing season and events MOFGA will be hosting, including raking, preparing garden beds, working in the kitchen, cleaning up the woodlot and more. For those who may want less physical activity, there will also be opportunities for office jobs including counting and organizing inventory, and helping with MOFGA’s online store.
“We love volunteering at Earth Day work day,” says Laura Barrett, long-time Earth Day volunteer. “Working outdoors with good people, helping things to grow, learning lots at the same time. Hard to beat that.”
This is a great way to enjoy some fresh air and the company of other MOFGA supporters. All ages and experience levels are welcome. Indoor activities will also be available. A home-cooked lunch will be provided for all participants at noon. Volunteering at MOFGA’s Earth Day work day is also an opportunity to connect with others in the community.
“Earth Day is a global event with an opportunity to make a local impact in our community,” says Timothy Boston, MOFGA’s community engagement coordinator. “MOFGA and our community of volunteers have been celebrating Earth Day since our founding in 1971. And we work every day to educate about and advocate for organic agriculture, illuminating its interdependence with a healthy environment, local food production and thriving communities.”
