Gifts of Assets

For more information about opportunities to give gifts of assets to MOFGA, please contact Meghan Metzger, director of development and membership, at [email protected] or 207- 568-6013.

You can support MOFGA by giving a gift of stock. If you contribute long-term appreciated securities (those held for at least one year), you may have an added benefit of owing no tax on their appreciation, thus avoiding long-term capital gains taxes.

Follow these steps to make a gift of stock:

  1. Transfer the desired stock to MOFGA.
  2. Alert MOFGA of the gift so that we may properly match you to your donation and acknowledge your gift.

Gifts of stock may be made through LPL Financial Services (1-800-585-6145, ext. 1517).

Giving cash is the simplest method of donating to MOFGA.

To give a cash gift, send a check or contribute online to MOFGA. We will use your donation to fund our critical work to support farmers, gardeners and the environment, or for a specific program that you specify.

You can mail a gift to:

Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association

PO Box 170

Unity, ME 04988

Please consider making a recurring monthly contribution through our Perennial Friend program. We count on the regular support of our members and donors for our yearly financial needs.

If you are 70½ or older, you can make a tax-free distribution from your traditional or Roth IRA to MOFGA.

Upon turning 70½, people with certain retirement accounts must begin to withdraw funds according to IRS rules. Funds withdrawn from some types of retirement accounts are subject to state and federal income tax. Failure to withdraw the required amount can result in a 50% penalty on the funds not withdrawn.

Rather than pay a 50% penalty, it is possible to take advantage of the “IRA Charitable Rollover” (aka Qualified Charitable Distribution), which allows a person age 70½ or older to withdraw up to $100,000 from his or her retirement accounts and donate it to charity without incurring any income tax on the funds withdrawn.

Follow these steps to give through your IRA:

  1. Direct distributions in the amount of your choosing from your traditional or Roth IRA to MOFGA. This can be a one-time or recurring gift.
  2. The distributions go directly to MOFGA and are not subject to federal income tax.
  3. To ensure that your gift is properly processed and that you are listed as the donor of record, please have all checks directed to the address below. Please also contact the director of development and membership at 207-568-6013 or [email protected] to let us know to expect your gift.

Please Note:

If you are still working and contributing to a retirement account, this gift could impact your taxable income. Please consult a qualified advisor before making a gift.

Making a donation of tangible personal property can be an excellent way to save on taxes, dispose of property that is expensive to insure or maintain (such as tractors, art, automobiles, boats or antiques), and support MOFGA at the same time.

Follow these steps to make a gift of personal property:

  1. Determine what personal property you would like to give to MOFGA. (Note: Gifts of personal property are made outright.)
  2. Contact MOFGA to ensure that your gift meets the guidelines of our Gift Acceptance Policy. Please also contact the director of development and membership at 207-568-6013 or [email protected].
  3. MOFGA may hold the property and display or use it, or may sell the property and use the proceeds to advance our critical work for farmers, gardeners and the environment.

For any specific tax questions for your unique situation we recommend consulting with a qualified advisor before making a gift.

Your real estate asset can make a lasting impact. By donating your farm, land, personal residence, vacation home or commercial real estate to MOFGA, you may be able to reduce your capital gains tax and receive an income tax deduction. Best of all, your gift will support our critical work to support farmers, gardeners and the environment.

Follow these steps to make this kind of gift:

  1. Contact MOFGA to ensure that your gift meets the guidelines of our Gift Acceptance Policy. Please contact MOFGA’s director of development and membership at 207-568-6013 or [email protected].
  2. Deed your property (such as a home, vacation home, commercial building or investment property) to MOFGA.
  3. MOFGA will sell the property and use the proceeds to support our critical programs. In very limited cases we may use the property for our own purposes.

For any specific tax questions for your unique situation we recommend consulting with a qualified advisor before making a gift.
