Support Our Local Food System for Continued Resilience

Many are concerned about impacts on our local food producers of efforts to limit the spread of the COVID-19 virus. A strong local food system is critical in tumultuous times like these, and MOFGA thanks customers who have made the existing system strong.

Many farmers selling directly to consumers have rapidly adapted to the COVID-19 situation by selling safe and healthy items with limited handling and by limiting exposure of customers to each other. We have updated our existing map of MOFGA-certified organic farms with an overlay (gray icons) that indicate farms that sell products on-farm (via farmstand or pre-order as examples), offer phone/website sales, or offer a CSA option.

It is early in the growing season and not all farms will have all products. It is important to check the farms’ websites or social media feeds or call to verify that they are allowing public access to the farm. Unless farmstand hours are clear to you, please do not visit farms unannounced.

Transmission of the COVID-19 virus is less likely when only one or a few known people handle food, and currently no reports exist of viral transmission through food. Some measures that are being taken by local producers include:

  • Selling only prepackaged “grab and go” bags of produce with flat-rate pricing to minimize produce and payment handling
  • Using separate staff to handle food and money, or payment boxes that won’t be handled for a few days
  • Moving some farmers’ markets outdoors earlier in the season than normal
  • Opening some farmstands earlier in the season
  • Offering online ordering and online payment options
  • Offering delivery or drop-off convenience

We urge you to continue to support our farmers. If you plan to sign up for a CSA share, please do so soon; these farmers need to know soon how many CSA members they’ll have in order to plan for the season.

Clicking on individual farm icons (including the color dots that appear at the base of the gray icon) reveals contact information, when made available. The circular icons indicate what types of products farms offer.

Gray icons indicate farms selling on-farm, via the internet, or offering CSA.

Towns where delivery is offered are listed when available.

This map shows MOFGA-certified organic producers only. The University of Maine Cooperative Extension offers a comprehensive map of producers, including some organic, who have indicated that they have products for sale at this time of year.
