Come join us for this in-person workshop at MOFGA to learn how to reproduce your favorite apple tree varieties! Bench grafting is a very cost-effective way to create (graft) new small trees for planting. This class will be taught by Laura Sieger, MOFGA’s Orchard Coordinator, and Jacob Mentlik of After the Fall Farm and Fedco. They will start by discussing why and when to bench graft fruit trees and will demonstrate several different types of graft (whip and tongue, bark, etc). Then everyone can begin grafting their own trees! There will be lots of time for practice and to ask questions.
Each participant will be provided with ~10 pieces of rootstock and scionwood to practice on, along with a grafting knife to bring home, parafilm tape for securing your grafts and a grafting compound to use where a seal is needed. All the scionwood will have been harvested from the MOFGA orchards or from other orchards around Maine. Bring your grafted trees home to plant!
Bench grafting is also being offered online this year; click here for more details.
