THIS EVENT IS FULL
After gardening for 20+ years in the woods of central Maine, Dawn moved south to Portland, where she is now growing under an entirely new set of conditions. For the past four years, she has been designing and growing an integrated vegetable and flower garden in her urban front yard. Inspired by Rosamund Creasy’s book Edible Landscaping, she has focused on creating a cottage-style garden in which the vegetables are both beautiful and productive.
Because space is at a premium, she has been experimenting with succession planting, staking, close spacing, and interplanting (e.g., salad greens between tomato plants) to make the most of her space. Dawn’s husband, Tom, is a carpenter, and they bought the property as a rehab project. So, like the house, the garden is a slow reclamation-in-progress: the yard has significant variation in soil quality, light conditions, and depth of neglect. But the project has been a fascinating lesson in “doing the best with what you have to work with,” and the garden has been consistently productive.
