Forest Stream Crossings & Restoration

November 3 @ 9:30 am - 3:30 pm

$10 – $40

Join MOFGA’s Low-Impact Forestry program for a visit to Appalachian Mountain Club’s (AMC) land near Katahdin Iron Works for a chance to learn about their stream restoration work. We will hear from their foresters as well as scientists from the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) and The Nature Conservancy (TNC). The workshop will begin with indoor presentations at AMC’s Gorman Chairback Lodge followed by a field tour to visit various stream restoration sites.

During this workshop we will learn about:

  • Stream ecology and hydrology
  • Value of Stream Smart road crossings
  • Design principals of Stream Smart road crossings
  • Funding and technical resources for landowners
  • Site visits: problems, options, and construction considerations in context of local natural conditions

Coffee and morning snacks will be provided. Please bring along a packed lunch!

Please bring weather and woods appropriate clothes and shoes (muck boots or hiking boots may be best!), water, personal snacks, and anything you need to be comfortable walking through the woods – on and off trail. This field day will involve uneven terrain and navigating woody plants and material.
