All About Root Cellars

October 5, 2021 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

Free

A discussion about root cellars with a friendly panel of experts from the MOFGA community.

Root cellars can take many forms – a room in a basement, a separate building, a bulkhead or even built into a hillside! – but they’re all great ways to store vegetables through the winter with relatively little effort or energy. Root cellars are designed to allow root crops and other hardy vegetables (carrots, potatoes, beets, cabbage and much more) to be stored for many months without degrading in quality.

Join our panel of root cellaring experts to learn about the basics of this form of vegetable storage, including which vegetables store well in a root cellar, for how long & in what environmental conditions. Then hear about each of their unique root cellar set-ups. Our presenters will also share tips and tricks for success with vegetable storage, gleaned after many years filling their own root cellars each fall.

This workshop will take place online and will be aimed at beginners, but also useful to those with experience with root cellaring. Lots of time for questions!

Presenters will include Roberta Bailey (Seven Tree Farm), Sue Szwed (Seek No Further Fruit Tree Nursery) and June Zellers (Avant Gardens).
