Primary Responsibilities: As a member of MOFGA’s communications and outreach team, the content creator and editor will provide vision and strategy for messaging across all our communications channels. Key responsibilities include working  collaboratively and creatively on compelling, quality content for the organization, including maintaining MOFGA’s voice while educating and reaching out to new and existing audiences; and helping create and edit  content  for various MOFGA communications, including press releases, newsletters (print and electronic), weekly email bulletin, The Maine Organic Farmer & Gardener (The MOF&G), online content, reports, fact sheets, talking points and others as needed. The individual in this role will be responsible for translating MOFGA’s core concepts and programs  into a written format that is easy to understand, accessible to a wide audience and inspires readers to take action.

Supervisor: Communications and Outreach Director

Work Week: 40 hours per week.

Additional Work Hours: Additional hours are required at various times throughout the year, including during the Common Ground Country Fair.

Position: Salaried. Federal Fair Labor Standards Act Exempt. The employee is not eligible for overtime payment.

Required Abilities and Knowledge:

  • In-depth knowledge of organic farming and gardening and related environmental issues
  • Proven track record of creating quality writing and editing, especially in Associated Press (AP) style
  • Ability to work with a variety of personalities and writing skills
  • Ability to meet deadlines and ensure that others meet deadlines
  • Strong verbal and very strong written communication skills with staff, volunteers and the public
  • Ability to work creatively and to take the initiative to create engaging and exciting content 
  • A commitment to MOFGA’s mission and program work
  • A commitment to work collaboratively with MOFGA staff, volunteers and community members

Responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively and creatively on compelling, quality content for the organization. This includes creating and editing copy for staff publications and our website, Examples include press releases, newsletters, fact sheets, annual reports, social media and other public-facing communications in coordination with the editorial calendar.
  • Stay up to date with all of MOFGA’s programming and communications needs and work to ensure a consistent and clear style and brand voice across varying channels. Transform core concepts or ideas into a written format, whether talking points for a presentation, website content, newspaper articles, membership correspondence, marketing content or more. Ensure that MOFGA’s varied audiences and programs are represented and supported by and engaged with written content.
  • Collaborate to create for various MOFGA channels content that maintains MOFGA’s voice and high level of integrity. Update and adapt style guide as needed to enable all stakeholders to be ambassadors for the organization.
  • Maintain a degree of consistency in all publications to facilitate reader familiarity with the content while ensuring that publications and content adapt as needed. All content must offer a high level of integrity; fact checking is necessary.
  • Act as primary staff member managing content for The Maine Organic Farmer & Gardener (The MOF&G). The MOF&G is currently printed four times annually, and copy may include the following: letters to the editor; editorials; summaries of important recent news items; feature stories; columns; reviews of books, videos and web resources; MOFGA organization news; Common Ground Country Fair news; volunteer and staff profiles; articles of program interest supplied by MOFGA staff; and calendar listings.
  • Ensure that The MOF&G copy is well-written, tasteful, accurate and appropriate for an organic farm and garden publication that aims to educate and entertain. Confirm that copy and art do not violate copyright laws. Work with authors as needed to edit text.
  • Work with communications director on author and photographer payments within the limits of The MOFGA budget and help facilitate payments to authors.
  • Act as primary point of contact in the organization to receive manuscripts and books for review and decide whether to review or promote these materials.
  • Provide photographs for MOFGA use when possible.

Carry out all the responsibilities listed above in accordance with the mission statement, goals and philosophy of the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association.
