Job Description

This position is for a shearing assistant/apprentice (referred to in the industry as a headman/headwoman) who’s duties include but are not limited to: catching up animals, assisting in moving and lifting animals, holding and positioning the animals during shearing, and keeping the animals and shearer safe. Applicant must be able to easily lift 100 lbs (as most animals we work with weigh 200 lbs maximum) and be tall enough to be able to reach over the back of an animal. Experience with large livestock is preferred, but not necessarily required. Being comfortable working with large livestock is required, as well as working long days and sleeping in hotels.

Benefits

This job is an independent contractor position paid by the number of head, and per stop. Total season pay for this position last year was $24,063 for the 4 month season. All lodging and work expenses paid for by the owner, included travel to and from the beginning and ending locations. All meals are included. Tips are common, and are split 50/50. This is a rare opportunity to learn to shear one on one with a leader in the industry. For someone who is interested in shearing as a profession, this is the quickest way to gain the necessary skills to make this job into a career.

What to Expect from Us

I realize this is not your average MOFGA job listing, so the interview process will serve as an opportunity for me to answer all your questions about this position. I am very accommodating and understanding, and know that this job is abnormal! This is my ninth season running this business, and the schedule is very full already. One part of the interview process will be meeting in person at my farm, where you can also meet my llamas. We can work with them in person, and while we can't do any actual shearing before we hit the road, we can talk through technique and get comfortable handling these animals.
