Please help us shore up support for the Relief for Farmers Hit with PFAS Act, a bill in Congress that directs the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to establish a grant program to help states and other entities address PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) contamination on agricultural land and commercial farms. Maine’s congressional delegation is solidly in support of this bill and now we need help enlisting additional co-sponsors across the country and across the political spectrum. If you live in Maine, please take this action to thank Sen. Susan Collins, Sen. Angus King, Rep. Chellie Pingree, and Rep. Jared Golden. If you live outside of Maine you can take action to encourage your members of Congress to co-sponsor the bill. Please share this link with family and friends across the country. Known as “forever chemicals,” PFAS linger in the environment indefinitely and are in the air, water, soil, and our bodies. They are damaging to human health even at the lowest levels. People exposed to PFAS can develop serious illnesses including kidney cancer, liver disease, thyroid disorders, or autoimmune disorders. Farm families throughout the United States are at risk of PFAS contamination through no fault of their own and we need Congress to act swiftly and ensure that it has farmers’ backs. While Maine is at the forefront of addressing farmland contamination, we know that PFAS threatens food and agriculture systems across the country. We urge ALL members of Congress to stand up for their farmer constituents and co-sponsor this legislation.
