Glyphosate under fire from San Francisco to Sri Lanka

March 28, 2019 –  Glyphosate, the world's most widely used herbicide and the active ingredient in Monsanto's weedkiller Roundup, is the subject of fierce controversy across the globe and is classified by the World Health Organization as "probably" being carcinogenic. After the second US cancer victim on Wednesday won a payout victory against Monsanto over the weedkiller, here is the state of play regarding lawsuits and restrictions on the use of glyphosate around the world.

Governor signs emergency legislation allowing sale of hemp-derived products in Maine

March 27, 2019 – Penobscot Bay Pilot – Governor Janet Mills signed emergency legislation March 27 to allow the production and sale of food additives and food products that contain hemp or hemp products in Maine. The legislation, LD 630, sponsored by Representative Craig Hickman, D-Winthrop, aligns the definition of hemp in state law with the definition in federal law as outlined in the 2018 Farm Bill and clarifies that hemp-derived food products or additives are no longer considered adulterated under state law and may be sold, according to a news release from the Governor’s office.

2019 Children’s Garden @ The Maine Flower Show

March 26, 2019 – Maine Dept. of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry – Maine Agriculture in the Classroom, Maine School Garden Network & ReTreeUS work diligently to incorporate gardening and orcharding into schools across the entire state all year long. Together these organizations have created a space for kids of all ages to have a hands-on gardening experience and an opportunity to learn about plants, and the food, fruit and flowers they produce. Touching the soil, planting, watering and learning about pollination, which are all key parts of growing, will be modeled in the children’s garden.
