La Granja de Presente! Maine
At Presente! Maine, we work to empower displaced Afro/Indigenous and Latinx peoples of Maine through survival programs, community power building, cultural celebration, and transformative healing practice. Presente envisions a world where all peoples enjoy their rights to joy, beauty, wellness, food, land, and home.
In 2020, we connected with Land in Common to return to the Earth and grow food. Through their Land Share Project, we secured an acre of land through a 99-year lease – our Collective Farm – in which we now grow traditional foods and follow a model of growing that is free from the colonial attitude of efficiency and maximum output. We see this work as a partnership with the land, to hold and be held, to work together to help plants do what they want to do – grow – and foster community connection with displaced people of Southern Maine.
During the growing months, we hold Community Farm Days where we co-learn with our community about sustainable farming practices and reconnect with ancestral farming traditions, while also allowing for moments of grief, rest, and celebration. By creating opportunities for the community to grow food, connect with “La Pachamama,” and relearn traditional food and medicine practices, we seek to transform the way we view our place in the ecosystem and grant our community the transformative experience of long-term land tenure.
Creating our own small-scale, community farm has given us choice and the ability to determine for ourselves what we consume and how we cultivate and work with the land to grow our foods. Over the past two years, we have produced over 50,000 lbs of food to give back to our community, and we have plans to continue to grow. However, with the current capacity of our farm, we are limited in the amount of food we can produce and the scope of our community engagement efforts.
We were recently presented with the opportunity to deepen our relationship with Land in Common and expand our farm into the adjoining fields of our existing plot. We only lack the funds to make this a reality, despite having the capacity to do so. This would allow us to cultivate a wider variety of crops and allow us to host larger and more frequent community gatherings and workshops, where community members can learn about food sovereignty and traditional farming techniques, and restore our sacred connection to food, land, and ourselves.
