Beech Hill Farm

College of the Atlantic’s ( COA) Beech Hill Farm produces certified organic vegetables for COA and the local community, while using methods that maintain the integrity and health of the land, and work toward environmental and economic sustainability. We have six acres in production and six greenhouses. In addition to providing locally and sustainably raised produce and meat to COA, Beech Hill Farm operates a busy seasonal farm store, offers a CSA program, sells to local markets and restaurants and distributes food through our student run food access program. We are located on Mount Desert Island, home to beautiful Acadia National Park.

Beech Hill Farm provides educational opportunities to COA students and community members through our work-study program, summer work program, independent projects, class visits, events, and workshops.

Job Description

  We are hiring for a Field Crew Leader, Field Crew and Farmstand Crew, and Farm Cook and Baker

1. ) Field Crew Leader:

Job Overview:

Full season crew leaders are responsible for leading student employees and summer field crew in all aspects of production including seeding, transplanting, cultivating, harvest, wash/pack, sales and distribution. Depending on experience, the full season crew members have the opportunity to take on more responsibilities in various aspects of the farm including greenhouse propagation, post harvest handling and tractor work.

Qualifications:

Willingness to work collaboratively and productively with a diverse group of people.
Ability to lift 50 lbs.
Ability to work in all kinds of weather.
Ability to perform repetitive tasks for long periods of time.
Ability to work efficiently in a fast paced environment.
At least two seasons working on a commercial vegetable production farm.

Job Responsibilities:

Lead summer crew members and student employees in all aspects of production, while setting pace and providing support, feedback and training to the production team.
Participate in all aspects of seedling production including preparing soil trays, seeding, watering and transplant care.
Assist with greenhouse production including bed preparation, cultivation, planting, harvesting and maintenance.
Assist with field production including bed preparation, transplanting, cultivation, row cover application, mulching, trellising, pruning, tarping and harvest.
Assist with washing and packing produce for distribution. Maintain a high standard of cleanliness, aesthetic appearance and food safety protocols.
Assist with general farm cleaning and maintenance. Tasks may range from cleaning the crew kitchen and bathroom to rebuilding greenhouses.
In addition, full season crew leaders may be asked to:
Deliver produce throughout Mount Desert Island.
Pack and distribute CSA shares.
Operate tractors and other farm equipment.

2.) Field Crew

Qualifications:

Enthusiasm and passion for sustainable agriculture, food justice and agriculture education.
Willingness to work collaboratively and productively with a diverse group of people.
Ability to lift 50 lbs.
Ability to work in all kinds of weather.
Ability to perform repetitive tasks for long periods of time.
Ability to work efficiently in a fast paced environment.

Preferred:

At least one season working on a commercial vegetable production farm
and/or
At least six months of manual labor working experience.
Job Responsibilities:

Assist with field production including bed preparation, transplanting, cultivation, row cover application, mulching, trellising, pruning, tarping and harvest.
Assist with washing and packing produce for distribution. Maintain a high standard of cleanliness, aesthetic appearance and food safety protocols.
Assist with general farm cleaning and maintenance. Tasks may range from cleaning the crew kitchen and bathroom to rebuilding greenhouses.
Use all tools, equipment and vehicles safely and conscientiously.
Keep all work areas clean and organized.
Arrive on time and give ample notice of requests for time off.
Maintain constructive communication with all members of the crew.

3.) Farmstand Crew

The Beech Hill Farm Farmstand is a vibrant and bustling on-farm store open June – November. We sell local meat, dairy and preserves in addition to our own produce and baked goods. Working in the farm-stand involves sales, customer service, display creation, restocking, organizing, managing inventory, packing up vegetables, cleaning and restocking and other tasks related to maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming retail environment.

Qualifications:

Excellent customer service.
Willingness to work collaboratively and productively with a diverse group of people.
Ability to work efficiently and enthusiastically in a fast paced environment.
Be willing and able to work in all weather conditions, and stand for long periods of time.
Ability to lift 50 lbs.
Commitment to working the full season.
Experience with retail and/or agriculture is a plus.

Job Responsibilities:

Provide excellent customer service.
Maintain a high standard of produce quality throughout the day.
Maintain a high standard of cleanliness, aesthetic appearance and food safety protocols.
Daily breakdown of the farmstand.
Restock and manage the display of our freezer, refrigerators and dry goods shelves.
Operate cash register and scale.
Ensure prices/signage are correct.
Handle customer questions, complaints and issues in a timely and appropriate manner.
Arrive on time and give ample notice of requests for time off.
Maintain constructive communication with all members of the field crew and farmstand staff.

4.) Farm Cook and Baker

Job Overview:

The Beech Hill Farm Cook produces baked goods and value added products to sell in our farm stand. The farm cook will be responsible for prep work and value added products including soup, salads, pesto, salad dressing and tomato sauce. The farm cook will be responsible for keeping a clean and organized work space and following all food safety protocols.

Qualifications:

Ability to work both independently and efficiently
Strong attention to detail and food safety
2 + years experience in a production kitchen
Up-to-date Food Handlers-Servsafe Certification
Knowledge, passion, and familiarity with local, organic, and seasonal produce.

Job Responsibilities:

Maintain a high standard of cleanliness, organization, sanitation and food safety protocols
Prepare high quality food items for sale in the farm stand.
Produce other value-added products as needed.
Create and recommend new recipes and methods to improve quality and increase production.
Maintain constructive communication with all members of the farm staff.
Prepare a weekly crew lunch for 15 people.
