Aldermere Farm is a 136-acre preserved saltwater farm in Rockport owned and managed by Maine Coast Heritage Trust (MCHT), a statewide land conservation organization. Aldermere is one of the world’s premier breeders of Belted Galloway cattle with the oldest continuously operated herd in the US. MCHT maintains Aldermere Farm as a working farm and educational center offering agricultural programming and community events.

Job Description

General Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Aldermere and Erickson Farm General Manager, this position supports all our agroecology initiatives and programming at Aldermere Farm and Erickson Fields Preserve in our efforts to educate, communicate and enhance our wholistic management approach focusing on access, education, ecological resilience, and community engagement and well-being.

Essential Job Functions:
Work with staff through an intensive planning and development phase to reevaluate outreach and programming needs at both preserves that incorporates diversity, equity, and inclusion Develop skills-based curriculum to support agricultural education both on and off the preserves Implement and run programming at both preserves independently and collaboratively with staff and volunteers Supervise students and beginner farmers working in the operations at both preserves Administrative responsibilities include program scheduling, participant communications, metrics and program evaluations. Work with the Engagement Department with external communications, funding and grant opportunities Create communications content for press releases, social media, internal materials and preserve signage. Be a liaison between the farms and the community to tell our story Collaborate with community partners to support initiatives related to working land access, ecological resiliency in the face of climate change, and community well-being. Engage with the larger farming community in a collaborative and leadership role finding ways to support a resilient food system, agricultural land stewardship and vibrant local communities. Participate in operations work at Erickson Fields and Aldermere Farm including but not limited to cattle chores, garden prep/harvest, and property maintenance

Supervisory Responsibilities:
Support and supervise youth and beginner farmers in both programming opportunities as well as on-site job placement

Education & Experience:
Bachelors’ degree in related field with three years of experience in agricultural education/support or a combination of relevant education, training, and/or experience

Qualifications:
Excellent project management, problem-solving skills Excellent analytical skills Excellent written communication skills Excellent interpersonal oral communication skills Ability to promote and maintain positive public relations and to interact with a wide variety of people Ability to communicate clear expectations and strategic goals to staff and volunteers Ability to coordinate projects with peers/supervisor in the organization collaboratively, including accepting positive feedback and constructive criticism to complete the tasks more effectively. Commitment to issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion as it relates to Maine agriculture, land stewardship, conservation, and community well-being Significant computer skills necessary to create and maintain email communications, spreadsheets and operational documents, utilizing assigned software. Ability to use hand tools and small machinery Valid Drivers’ license

Working Conditions & Physical Demands:
Work with take place in the office and in the field. Field operations work is almost entirely outdoors in all year-round conditions. Work will require significant physical strength and endurance. Some substantial care will need to be taken while working around cattle that can weigh up to 2,000 pounds and at times can be aggressive and while working around potentially dangerous equipment. Must be able to lift 50 pounds repeatedly up to an hour. Subjected to farm related odors. Administrative Work is performed in a normal office environment not subject to extremes of noise, temperature, odor, etc.
