This workshop is being offered at MOFGA’s Education Center in Unity, Maine.
Lambing or kidding tends to be a stressful time, especially for people who are new to raising sheep or goats. These animals tend to have multiple offspring and are small in stature, which tends to put some sheep and goat owners on edge leading into the birthing season.
But with a little preparation you’ll find it isn’t as worrisome as you may have thought. Join Jacki Martinez Perkins, MOFGA’s Dairy and Livestock Specialist, for a discussion and demonstration around the normal progression of birth and some of the complications that can arise. Jacki will help you understand what to expect and will share a list of equipment to have on hand.
We have built a birthing simulator that will help us demonstrate what it’s like to assist livestock during parturition (the process of giving birth). Some tools and techniques that can be helpful in complex births will also be discussed. This class is designed to give individuals some new skills and knowledge to ease the stress surrounding growing a herd or flock.
Please note: this class is not happening on a farm in the presence of livestock; rather it’s an opportunity to learn and practice before birthing season begins.
