Orcharding 101
April 25, 2021 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm
A Three Part Workshop with Michael Phillips on April 25, May 2 and May 9
Cost: Sliding Scale, $30-$80, for all three sessions.
Free for MOFGA Journeyperson program participants, BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) and veterans.
Scholarships are also available – anyone can apply here.
Michael Phillips, author of The Apple Grower and The Holistic Orchard, will lead us through a comprehensive exploration of orchard health strategies that make it possible for organic growers grow top-notch fruit and address disease and insect challenges.
Michael is renowned for helping people grow healthy fruit using herbal protocols and friendly microbes. His approach is premised on the fact that growing healthy fruit begins with understanding biological core truths. These, in turn, determine how we go about stewarding the orchard ecosystem through the growing season. He will discuss specific pest challenges experienced by fruit growers in New England and Eastern Canada, and what’s to be done. All becomes far more manageable as you build a holistic system that keeps trees and berry plantings healthy from the get-go.
Schedule:
April 25th: Five Tenets of Holistic Orcharding
May 2nd: Fungal Duff Management (a.k.a Orchard Ecosystems)
May 9th: A Walk Through the Seasons
Michael’s latest book is called Mycorrhizal Planet: How Fungi and Plants Work Together to Create Dynamic Soils, and the community orchard movement he helped to found at GrowOrganicApples.com provides a full immersion into the holistic approach to orcharding. His Lost Nation Orchard is part of a medicinal herb farm in northern New Hampshire.
This class usually takes place over a full day, in-person, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic we are offering it virtually, in 3 parts. Webinar sessions will be recorded and shared with participants afterwards.
