Fumbling Toward Prosperity: Family, Community and the Maine Food Economy

Friday, September 20, 2019

Through storytelling, poetry, excerpts from legislative testimony and remarks on the floor of the House of Representatives, Hickman's keynote speech will outline his family's tradition of food self-sufficiency and feeding community; how the death of his father, a Tuskegee Airman and urban backyard farmer, inspired him to become an organic farmer in Maine; how farming in Maine, coupled with his intense community involvement in the Winthrop Lakes Region, inspired him to run for the Legislature on a platform of ending hunger, increasing access to healthy food for our most vulnerable and revitalizing rural communities; and how he ended up twice chairing the Joint Standing Committee on Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry, where he has championed food sovereignty, food self-sufficiency, rural economic development, investments in food processing infrastructure in targeted areas of the state, a constitutional right to food for the people of the state, and other public policies that put resilient communities and small, sustainable family farmers and food producers at the center of solving some big problems and creating a robust Maine food economy now and into the future.
