United We Grow: Veterans in Agriculture

Sunday, September 22, 2019

An estimated 4.3 million service members have transitioned out of the military since 2003 and represent a new generation of military veterans. Exiting military members leave their service having been trained in very specific skills, behaviors and values that often do not translate well into civilian work or school life. After 27 years on active duty as a U.S. Marine Corps officer, Anne Devin transitioned to full-time farming in 2016 with the vision of replicating an agricultural environment that will honor and support those transitioning veterans.

In establishing their own farm and business, Devin and her family have learned that many of the soft skills practiced in the military, such as leadership, persistence and flexibility, are crucial to their success. Veterans benefit from a translation and application of these skills into a focused and disciplined industry. Agricultural work provides the perfect environment for veterans to establish their own regimen, experiment with innovation, and manage their own personal interactions.

In her keynote, Devin will discuss how her military experiences are helping her family and her navigate farming as a lifestyle and business. She will also lay out their vision of developing a veteran-to-farmer transition program and how the community can help support its local veteran farmers.
