Volunteer Profile Michael Bunker

September 1, 2018 – To say that running is Michael Bunker’s life might be an overstatement, but it certainly has been a major focus since at least his college days at the University of Southern Maine (USM). That explains why, when Jim Bovey stopped coordinating the 5K Sunday morning race at the Common Ground Country Fair, Bunker really missed it. The year that the race was not run, Heather Spalding, MOFGA’s deputy director, suggested that Bunker take on the coordinator job. He was soon organizing the race – “a great way to kick off Sunday morning at the Fair,” he says.

MOFGA Volunteer Paul Schlein

June 1, 2018 – Paul Schlein says he’s never been a joiner, but during his eight years as the public information officer for the Maine Board of Pesticides Control (BPC), he came to admire and respect the work that MOFGA does – attending and commenting at every BPC meeting as well as during rulemaking for bills concerning pesticides. So he joined MOFGA and its Public Policy Committee. Since then he has worked on public policy teach-ins at the Common Ground Country Fair along with other activities of that committee.

MOFGA Volunteer Sari Lindauer

March 2018 – Empowering children to take charge of their own educational experience seems to be the overarching theme of Sari Lindauer's professional life. From her work teaching science at the Breakwater School in Portland to her co-coordinating the Youth Enterprise Zone (YEZ) at the Common Ground Country Fair, Lindauer is constantly looking for ways to help kids experience the joys of being "makers."

MOFGA Centerpieces Featured at Banquet

March 1, 2018 – This year the Common Ground Country Fair crew had the honor of providing the centerpieces for the annual Maine Association of Agricultural Fairs banquet in Portland. Our goal was to have all the centerpiece components be edible, reusable, educational or recyclable. As a result, our 65 centerpieces featured organic local vegetables from farms that were in the 2017 Common Ground Country Fair Farmers’ Market or Food areas. We also included recipes and issues of The Maine Organic Farmer & Gardener newspaper. These were taken home and will feed and educate Fair organizers and volunteers, from all across Maine. People loved them!

2017 Common Kitchen Donors

December 1, 2017 – It's said that an army travels on its stomach. That was never truer than for the Common Ground County Fair (CGCF). Morning, noon and night, the Common Kitchen is there to feed the hundreds of hungry, tired, dedicated volunteers, planning team and paid staff members who make CGCF happen. The kitchen accomplishes this with hard working, creative volunteer cooks and the generosity of a multiplicity of certified organic farmers, natural food stores, food vendors, businesses, individuals and international corporations. Here is the roster of food donors to the 2017 Common Kitchen.
