Throughout the year, MOFGA hosts hundreds of meetings, workshops, conferences, dinners and festive gatherings. Many take place at our Common Ground Education Center in Unity, Maine. Kids Gardening Club

Conversation & fun related to bugs!

July 14, 2020 – Tuesday, 11 a.m. to 12 noon. Online. FREE. Do you know a kid who is growing their own garden, or a row in their family’s garden? Please encourage them to come to the 2nd meeting of MOFGA's Kids Gardening Club! Kids (approximately aged 6-10) can log onto Zoom with parental support to connect with other young gardeners. Facilitated by MOFGA staff, this meeting will include conversation & fun related to BUGS (pollinators, beneficals, pests and more!). Kids are encouraged to find an insect in their gardens and take a photo of it in advance of this meeting. We'll have a sharing circle and follow-along craft activity, too. REGISTRATION

Soil Health and Intensified Vegetable Growing

Wednesday, July 22, 2020 – 5 p.m. on ZOOM. Daniel Mays, farmer at Frith Farm, produces diversified vegetables on 2 acres in a no-till system. Come electronically discuss soil health management strategies including cover cropping, tarping, and permanent bed systems as we take a virtual tour of his farm. Learn about Wabanaki food system rematriation efforts and explore an Indigenous perspective on land justice with Alivia Moore, co-founder of Eastern Woodlands Rematriation. Modern Dairy and Agricultural Policy

In recent decades, many small dairy farms have had to “get big or get out” as the rising cost of operating a small scale, pasture-based dairy has grown beyond economic sustainability. In order to become profitable, many producers have gotten creative – by diversification, value-added production and innovative marketing strategies. Come electronically meet Rhiannon and Gregg of Grace Pond Farm in Thomaston who raise cows,  distribute milk, and grow turkeys. Rhiannon will also discuss agricultural policy and her work with Congresswoman Chellie Pingree.

Farming and Marketing Cooperatively

Wednesday, August 12, 2020 – 5 p.m. on Zoom. Join us electronically to learn about New Roots Cooperative Farm, a New American-owned cooperative in practice and learn about worker co-op farms, farmland co-ops, marketing co-ops, labor co-ops and equipment sharing co-ops. You'll learn about cooperative economic structure, democratic decision-making, and distribution of the surplus farmers collectively generate. Registration link coming soon.

Kitchen Licensing: Online Format

Two Parts: Part 1: August 13, Thursday, 2-4 p.m., Part 2: August 19, Wednesday, 4-6 p.m. Fee: $30; $20 for MOFGA members. Scholarships available - please email [email protected] for details!. We're taking this annual workshop for new or aspiring food business operators online! This workshop is designed for farmers and others interested in home food processing for resale or beginning to sell new value-added products. Licensing requirements, food safety, liability insurance, labeling and organic certification requirements will all be covered. Normally, this is a full day, in-person workshop. Seed Saving and Production on a Diversified Farm

Wednesday, August 26, 2020 – 5 p.m. on Zoom. Roberta Bailey of Fedco Seeds operates Seven Tree Farm in Vassalboro, 18 acres with seven field plots, high tunnel, orchard, grape arbor, and extensive fruit and berry plantings. The farm also includes many post and beam buildings and a root cellar. Roberta focuses on growing much of the food for herself and her partner, Rob Lemire, and on raising commercial seed crops on a small-farm scale. Seed crops can work well with field production gardens, further diversifying farm income and securing seed supply in some situations. The talk will focus on interplanting seed crops in gardens or field plots, using the byproducts of the crop for food production or value-added products to sell, and on basic seed saving and plant genetics, crop nutrition, rotations, isolations, and how to harvest and dry seed. The talk will cover biennials such as beets and carrots as well. Please register for this event here.

Growing Mushrooms Outdoors

September 12, 2020 – Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., MOFGA's Common Ground Education Center, Unity, Maine. Fee: $55; $40 for MOFGA members. Mushrooms are delicious nutritional powerhouses and a great addition to homestead garden. Learn how to approach mushroom growing outdoors, on logs, and practice inoculating logs harvested from MOFGA's woodlot. Please bring a bagged lunch. Great Maine Apple Day 2020

October 18, 2020 – Sunday, 12 noon to 4:00 p.m., Common Ground Education Center, 294 Crosby Brook Road, Unity, Maine. Rain or shine. Celebrate the diverse array of tree crops that grow in our backyards in Maine. Workshops, educational displays, cider pressing, pie baking contest, treats, and tons to learn about apples and so much more. Get your unknown apples identified. $4; $2 for MOFGA members.

2020 Nose to Tail Pork Processing

October 24-26, 2020 – Saturday-Monday, 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m., MOFGA’s Common Ground Education Center, Unity. This hands-on workshop will demonstrate how you can get the most and the best out of an organic, pasture-raised pig, from slaughter to sausage, using every part but the squeal.
