Farmer to Farmer Conference 2020

November 2, 4 and 6, 2020

Our Farmer to Farmer Conference brought together farmers and agricultural service providers to learn from speakers and each other in a conference built around learning from the knowledge present in the room. This year we went virtual, bringing together presentations, panels and breakout groups mixed with farmer-led discussion groups and 1-on-1 video chatting opportunities.

Fall Gardening Webinar Series

December 2, 2020 – Wednesday, 12 to 1 p.m. Moderators: Laura Sieger, MOFGA’s Orchard Coordinator and Lynne Holland, UMaine Extension Community Education Assistant. Whether you are a hobby orchardist, commercial grower, or interested in starting your own orchard, we want to hear from you! Join us for this special panel discussion with Fruit Tree experts from across the state to reflect on this past growing season, share lessons and challenges from different parts of the state, and discuss plans for next year’s growing season. Balsam Fir: A Holiday Resource From Your Woodlot

December 9, 2020 – Wednesday, 7 to 8 p.m. Join Dave Fuller, agriculture and non-timber forest products professional with the University of Maine Cooperative Extension, for a one-hour free webinar on sustainable harvest practices and uses of balsam fir for holiday decorations and more. The webinar will also cover working with balsam fir as a way to engage youth in the Maine woods, and explore the potential for holiday greens as a complementary enterprise on farms and homesteads. Wreath Making Workshop

December 15, 2020 – Tuesday, 5 to 6 p.m., Online. Fee: $25; $20 for MOFGA members. Join Ruby Nelson of Pine Root Farm in Steep Falls, Maine, for a virtual workshop about making beautiful holiday wreaths from balsam fir. Balsam fir boughs for wreath-making should be collected after November 1st and following at least 3 consecutive 20 degree nights – late November is usually the perfect time! So harvest some balsam boughs, gather a few basic crafting supplies, brew a hot cup of tea and connect with this group of wreath makers via Zoom! REGISTRATION

Join MOFGA’s Crops and Conservation Specialist Caleb Goossen for this webinar to learn about everything you need to know before you order seeds for next year’s garden including variety selection, disease-resistant, how much to order, and more!  REGISTRATION

Low-Impact Forestry Harvest Tour

January 6, 2021 – Wednesday, 12 to 3 p.m., Dexter, Maine. $20; $15 for MOFGA members. Tour an active harvest with forester and logger Rob Nelson. He'll demonstrate his small Swedish cut-to-length system and discuss how he manages woodlots using low-impact forestry principles. Rob will also discuss how forest improvement project funding from the Natural Resource Conservation Service can help landowners, foresters and loggers carry out exceptional forestry. Registration is limited for this event and MOFGA requires that participants complete a pre-attendance health self-evaluation, wear a mask at all times and practice social distancing. REGISTRATION

Timber Stand Improvement Projects: Increasing Value and Health in your Woodlot

February 8, 2020 – Monday, 6 to 7:30 p.m. $10 $5 for MOFGA members. Join this webinar to learn about hands-on work you can do to increase forest health, wildlife habitat, and financial value in your forest. The event will feature a video of Forester Mike Richard and Land Steward Tim Libby demonstrating and discussing pre-commercial thinning techniques, followed by a live discussion and Q&A. They'll talk about working with a forester to set up a TSI project, funding opportunities that can help defray some of your initial investment, and dive into some of the specifics of carrying out TSI work safely and efficiently.
