Jim Cook, founder of Crown of Maine Organic Produce, passed away Thursday at the age of 59. He had recently been diagnosed with esophageal cancer and was undergoing treatment. His family says it seemed that he just decided it was time. Jim has been a leader in bringing food from outlying areas, including his own Skylandia Farm in Grand Isle, to markets in Maine and beyond. His persistent knocking on doors opened markets ranging from buying clubs to restaurants across Maine for dozens of farmers. Crown of Maine Organic Produce will continue operations, with Jim’s daughter Marada helping to provide leadership. The family will hold a private service soon and is planning a public gathering for later in the winter. We’ll post details when they are available.
