MOFGA presents a Chain Saw and Forest Safety Course
November 18 and 19, 2005
at MOFGA's Common Ground Education Center
Unity, Maine
The MOFGA Low Impact Forestry committee is pleased to offer an entry-level chainsaw course that will run concurrently with the annual Low-Impact Forestry workshop, November 18 and 19. This training has been requested by past participants in the LIF weekends who have asked for a skills, safety and maintenance course-training that has been next to impossible to find outside of the professional level.
This two-day course will cover many aspects of chainsaw use. Day one will start in the classroom with topics including an overview of the chainsaw with nomenclature and safety features, saw chain and saw tooth filing, maintenance, personal protective equipment (PPE) and its use. The afternoon will move the class outside and students will operate their saws at the boring and bucking stations.
Day two will be mostly outside work, as individuals learn more about safety and proper ergonomics and positioning. Felling tools, wedge use, reactive forces, and felling information will be taught as each student progresses to dropping trees. The class will review the stump and score it. From there, we will move to single, double, and swing bores, snag management, spring pole management and firewood stump preparation to buck wood off the ground.
All students are expected to provide a tuned saw, tools, PPE (steel toed boots, leg protection, hearing, eye and head protection) and gloves. This equipment must meet CLP/OSHA standards. Some extra PPE and tools will be available to loan for the course.
This course is being taught by Pete Tracy of the Certified Logging Professional Program, the benchmark of safety and technical instruction in Maine.
¢ Class size will be limited to fifteen, with a first come, first served signup policy.
¢ Applicants must be 18 years of age or older unless prior consent is given.
¢ Course fee for two days, including meals and a floor to sleep on or a place to tent is $160.00 per person
