Why should you (and your horse) come to this workshop?

  • If you are a small woodlot owner and don't know where to start in the management of your woods, come meet with our consulting foresters and see how they have worked to improve the MOFGA woodlot.
  • If you do not own a horse or steer but would like the chance to work with one, here is a unique opportunity to work with some of the best in New England.
  • You will have the opportunity to have experienced teamsters watch you work and assist you in problem-solving your technique, your gear and your relationship with your horse.
  • If you have a problem with your horse or your horse has a problem with you, we have highly skilled and affordable trainers to help.
  • If you have ever wanted to work with a modern, portable sawmill, this is your chance.

The workshop will include instruction and practice on topics including:

  • How to fit harnesses and collars
  • Basic driving skills and safety
  • How to build a woods scoot
  • Twitching with a single horse
  • Driving a team with a scoot
  • How to use a horse drawn logging arch
  • Logging with oxen
  • How to lay out woods roads
  • Starting a young or green horse
  • What to look for when buying a horse or ox

There will also be historical film screenings and a roundtable discussion on Friday evening featuring regional leaders in Low-Impact Forestry concepts and practices.

On both days there will be a Chainsaw Saftey Course running concurrently. For more information on this, click here.

Registration fees include hearty meals and a midmorning snack each day. To register, download the registration form as a MS Word document (DOC, 53Kb) or an Adobe Acrobat document (PDF, 230Kb), fill it out, and send with payment to:
