MOFGA to Teach Organic Gardening Classes Statewide
The Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA) is sponsoring a statewide educational event-Growing Your Own Organic Garden-at 18 different locations in Maine on Wednesday, April 3, from 7 - 9 pm. The workshops are open to the public, and are designed to provide gardeners with essential skills and knowledge needed to make a transition from conventional to organic gardening.
Participants will acquire an understanding of:
- the basics of soil science, and how to enrich soil to produce healthy, high yielding plants;
- composting methods;
- the principles of crop rotation, and how to incorporate green manures and manage nutrients in the garden;
- the difference between cultivated plants and weeds, and basic weed control strategies; and
- common insect pests and methods of natural insect control.
The presenters have been carefully chosen and are seasoned MOFGA farmers and gardeners from the local area. The workshops will be held at the following sites:
Augusta: Capital Area Technical Center (CATC)
Bangor: Bangor Public Library, 145 Harlow St.
Belfast: Unitarian Universalist Church, 37 Miller St.
Brunswick: Curtis Library, 23 Pleasant St.
Bridgton: Bridgton Municipal Complex (One Chase Common)
Camden: Camden Hills Regional High School
Dover/Foxcroft: USDA/FSA Office, Dover Plaza, Guilford Rd.
Ellsworth: Unitarian Universalist Church, Bucksport Rd.
Fort Kent: Fort Kent High School
Houlton: Houlton Regional Hospital Education Center
Sherman Station: Katahdin High School
Monmouth: Highmoore Farm
Portland: Portland Public Market
Presque Isle: Presque Isle High School
Wells: Laudholm Farm, 342 Laudholm Farm Rd.
Wilton: Farm and Home Museum, Canal St.
Wiscasset: Morris Farm
For more information or to preregister please call the MOFGA office at 568-4142. A registration fee of $5 per person will be collected at the door to help cover the cost of hand-outs and a bibliography which will be distributed at each site.
