Great Maine Apple Day a Big SuccessNovember 10, 2001 (Unity, Maine) -- Hundreds of people, and 27 different apple pies, showed up at MOFGA's Common Ground on Saturday, November 10th, 2001, to celebrate a great Maine agricultural tradition. Throughout American history, Maine has been a famous source of apples for New England, Great Britain, and the world at one time. Now, despite competition from western states, and recently from asian countries, orchards and apple lovers from all over Maine gathered in Unity to learn that the apple industry is very much alive in Maine.The highlight of the afternoon was an apple pie contest, with a $100 first prize, which was one by Mary K. Jones of Cumberland, ME. All five prize winning recipes are linked below:
