Great Maine Apple Day a Big Success

November 10, 2001 (Unity, Maine) -- Hundreds of people, and 27 different apple pies, showed up at MOFGA's Common Ground on Saturday, November 10th, 2001, to celebrate a great Maine agricultural tradition. Throughout American history, Maine has been a famous source of apples for New England, Great Britain, and the world at one time. Now, despite competition from western states, and recently from asian countries, orchards and apple lovers from all over Maine gathered in Unity to learn that the apple industry is very much alive in Maine.

The highlight of the afternoon was an apple pie contest, with a $100 first prize, which was one by Mary K. Jones of Cumberland, ME. All five prize winning recipes are linked below:

1st Prize: Maine Apple Pie
2nd Prize: Collaboration Apple Pie
3rd Prize: Great Northern Spy Pie
4th Prize: Maine Market Day Apple Pie
5th Prize: Apple Pie
