Great Maine Apple Day
Noon to 4pm, Saturday, November 10, 2001
at MOFGA's Common Ground Exhibition Hall - Unity, Maine
***Apples and Pies To Be Judged Must Be Registered by 12:30pm***
Great Maine Apple Display and Tasting
It doesn't matter what corner of the state you hail from, we're sure there's a tasty apple right nearby. Whether it's one from the rock wall or one you planted ten years ago bring us few to make our display of apple varieties as well rounded as possible. Everyone is welcome: individuals and growers. And you could walk away with a prize!
Eligible:
- Known varieties
- Unidentified varieties
- Unnammed seedlings or "natural fruit"
- Unusual, odd, weird, or otherwise amazing fruits
All entries will be judged by the Maine Pomological Society. Awards of $10.00 will be given to the best representation of each named variety. Special awards will be given for natural fruit and unusual selections.
Rules:
- Each participant can enter any number of varieties.
- Apples must be grown in Maine.
- Please bring a minimum of three samples of each variety.
- Identify varieties by name or location if name is unknown
- Pomological Society Members not eligible for prizes.
- Apples may not be returned!!!
All apples entered will be available for tasting throughout the day. So, even if you don't have an apple, we'll still enlist your tastebuds!

Great Maine Two-Crusted Apple Pie Contest
(Pies will be tasted and judged by famous and not-so-famous Maine celebrities. Everyone is welcome to enter.*)
Individuals wishing to enter should arrive by 12:30pm., pies in hand. Entrants shall follow rules listed below. Any deviation from these rules shall result in disqualification.
- One Pie per Contestant
- All apples must be grown in the state of Maine. No fruit other than apples, but fruit juices are acceptable.
- All participants shall submit a written recipe stating all ingredients and processes. Pies must be baked true to submitted recipe.
- All pies must be of the two-crusted type, i.e. a bottom and top crust.
- * Pomological Society Members not eligible.
Judges will be scoring competing pies in three categories:
- Apperarance
- Taste of Crust and Filling, and
- Preparation
The following prizes will be awarded at the ened of the day:
- 1st Prize: $100.00
- 2nd Prize: $75.00
- 3rd Prize: $75.00
- 4th Prize: $50.00
- 5th Prize: $50.00
Winners may be asked to talk about what makes a great apple pie!
