Organic and Sustainable Agriculture News
Study: Common pesticide appears to reduce live bee sperm
The Washington Post - 7/26/2016.
By Seth Borenstein - A new study finds that a commonly used insecticide kills much of the sperm created by male drone honey bees, one reason why the bees are dwindling.
The movement to free hens from cages may be going global
The Washington Post - 7/25/2016.
By Karin Brulliard - Dozens of American restaurant chains, supermarket chains and dining service companies have committed in the last two years to ending their use or sales of eggs laid by caged hens. On Monday, one of the world’s largest food service suppliers, Paris-based Sodexo, upped the ante, saying it would switch to cage-free eggs in all its global operations by 2025.
Could CRISPR Gene Editing Change the Future of Ag?
Civil Eats - 7/25/2016.
By Jesse Frost - Up until recently, a genetically modified organism was one that had its genetic materials engineered. Now, a new technology is completely blurring the line. It’s called gene editing, and it involves “turning off” or deleting genes from a plant’s genome, as opposed to moving genes from one species to another.
Aroostook County native takes reins of Maine Grain Alliance
Portland Press Herald - 7/24/2016.
By Mary Pols - When the 10th annual Kneading Conference kicks off in Skowhegan this week, attendees will be introduced to Tristan Noyes, the new executive director of the Maine Grain Alliance. When it’s not hosting the wildly popular artisan bread fair, the alliance works to preserve and promote grain traditions, including bringing heritage wheats back into production in Maine. Noyes is an Aroostook County native who runs a [MOFGA-certifie organic] lettuce farm called Gromaine in the County with his younger brother. We called him up to find out what lettuce has to do with grain and what his plans are for the organization.
