Start a Butterfly Garden

June 1, 2018

Want to attract more butterflies to your landscape? Consider planting a butterfly garden.

Prepare the soil in an area in full sun. Include some flat rocks to absorb heat and warm the butterflies. Provide water – a shallow dish of water with a rock in it, for example; or a depression in the ground that you keep moist. A brush pile can provide shelter.

Purchase transplants or sow seeds of flowering plants that attract butterflies, such as butterfly weed (Asclepias incarnata). Fedco Seeds offers a Bee and Butterfly Pollinators Collection, and Johnny’s Selected Seeds has a Butterfly and Hummingbird Mix.

Prepare yourself to tolerate some damage to plants from caterpillar feeding. You can’t have butterflies without caterpillars.
