Joel Cartwright, 24, enthusiastic advocate of sustainability in all its aspects, died in Tenants Harbor in late June. Joel helped start the Bowdoin College Organic Garden. He was a regular volunteer at Common Ground Country Fair, in his community and around the world. His sister, Chelsea, and parents Steve and Kathy Cartwright have helped start the “Flannel Shirt Fund” at Maine Initiatives, which will support farm-to-school and school garden efforts.
Barbara Eggert, one of the earliest members of the Wednesday Spinners, died in July after a long illness. Barbara and her husband Frank had a small farm on Verona Island where they hosted many Hancock County MOFGA events. With their gardens and their flock of sheep, they showed what is possible when you dive in with knowledge and enthusiasm.
We missed Dorothy Martin’s presence in the Exhibition Hall at this year’s Fair. Along with her husband, Bob, Dorothy helped many people join MOFGA each year and answered hundreds of people’s questions as well. She and Bob are also very well known for the gladiolas they have grown each year in their Belgrade gardens. Our condolences to Bob.
