MOFGA members have many sources of information about organic farming and gardening. We connect with supporters through our weekly email bulletin, on Facebook, Twitter, forums on www.mofga.net, press releases, targeted online action alerts and, of course, through The Maine Organic Farmer & Gardener.

It’s so convenient to have quick info fixes and points of contact. It’s also a treat to sit back and read longer, informative articles like what we offer in this quarterly newspaper. As you’re taking the time to peruse this issue (and we are so grateful that you are!), you may have some time to think about the MOFGA mission and how we translate it to a simple expression for day-to-day conversation.

The MOFGA Mission Statement

The purpose of the Association is to help farmers and gardeners: grow organic food, fiber and other crops; protect the environment; recycle natural resources; increase local food production; support rural communities; and illuminate for consumers the connection between healthful food and environmentally sound farming practices.

Every few years, the MOFGA board and staff discuss and dissect the mission statement. Our programming is so broad and rich that we’ve found it nearly impossible to shorten the statement. Recently we have been considering simple expressions that are easily memorized and conveyed to the public. These “elevator speeches” complement our mission statement and can be shared with others quickly to explain why folks support MOFGA. Here’s an example:

MOFGA is a group of people who celebrate organic farming and gardening in Maine for the health of its land, people and economy.

While this expression lacks specificity, it highlights what all of us appreciate about this vibrant organization. If your affiliation with MOFGA is more focused on our efforts to create the next generation of Maine farmers, you may be inspired to create a simple expression emphasizing our new farmer program. Maybe you’re most concerned about defending the certified organic label in the marketplace. Maybe you’re working hard to develop appropriate food safety practices and policies that work for Maine’s small family farms. Maybe you want to celebrate rural living at any opportunity. We would love to hear suggestions for short, sweet statements that we can relay through our various media channels and conversations.

Thanks for reading and thinking about MOFGA!
