"Perhaps the most radical thing you can do in our time is to start turning over the soil, loosening it up for the crops to settle in, and then stay home and tend them."

Rufus Hellendale of Harborside died in June after a fall in his beloved woods. A near neighbor of the Nearings, Rufus believed strongly in growing his food and being outside on his small farm – when he wasn’t paragliding above Blue Hill Mountain.

Bill Jones of Peaks Island passed away this spring, also. Bill was excited by ideas, and he and Elaine spent a lot of time working with Wes Jackson at the Land Institute. I always enjoyed getting his notes and letters that tied together his work there and his time here in Maine.
