Food Safety Modernization Act
Proposed Rules Threaten Maine Small Farms
Public Comments Due to FDA by Nov. 15

The FDA's proposed food safety rules could require weekly tests for irrigation water, may forbid rotating animals onto land used for vegetable production, and may classify farms that source other local produce to bolster their CSA shares as "facilities" - with prohibitively expensive food safety requirements.

Read about our comment template (Word, 66K).

MOFGA urges farmers and consumers to comment to the FDA by its November 15 deadline. Consider holding a letter-writing campaign in your community. Here are some options for submitting comments:

Comment online at http://www.regulations.gov/#!submitComment;D=FDA-2011-N-0921-0199

E-mail comments to oira_submission@omb.eop.gov or fax comments to the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, OMB, Attn: FDA Desk Officer, FAX: 202-395-7285. All comments should be identified with the title "Standards for the Growing, Harvesting, Packing, and Holding of Produce for Human Consumption."

Mail comments to Division of Dockets Management (HFA-305), Food and Drug Administration, 5630 Fishers Lane, Rm. 1061, Rockville, MD 20852.

New Design Sought for MOFGA-Certified Organic Logo

MOFGA wants to focus on ways to boost the impact of MOFGA-certified organic for both farmers and consumers. We want more producers to seek certification through MOFGA and the best way to do that is to strengthen the MOFGA-certified organic logo in the marketplace. Our logo needs to be the label that everyone recognizes and seeks out when buying food and farm products. By redesigning our certification logo we hope to improve overall marketing of the MOFGA-certified organic brand. Toward that end, a Request for Proposal (RFP) has been published, and we encourage our producers to share it far and wide. The deadline for proposals is Monday, 30 December 2013.

Access the full RFP here. (PDF download, 381k)

LifeFlight Donates AED to MOFGA

MOFGA's Common Ground Education Center is now a safer place, thanks to a generous donation by LifeFlight, Maine's emergency medical helicopter service, and Zoll Medical Corporation, the leading manufacture of AEDs (automated external defibrillator). The new AED, which will be located outside the first floor bathrooms in MOFGA's main building, can be used in case of a heart attack.

"In the event of a major medical emergency, time is of the essence," says Tom Judge, LifeFlight's executive director. "Having an AED close by can make the difference between life and death. LifeFlight and Zoll were happy to make MOFGA's headquarters a safer place to work and hold meetings."

LifeFlight provides advanced emergency medical care using two helicopters, one based in Lewiston and one in Bangor. Each year LifeFlight cares for more than 1,500 critically ill or injured people from all across Maine.
"This AED is an important piece of medical equipment to have on our site," says Chris Hamilton, MOFGA's associate director. "We are grateful to both LifeFlight and Zoll for making this especially generous donation."
