Organic Orcharding Workshop: Bud Grafting with Seth Yentes

August 3, 2019
Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
North Branch Farm, Monroe, Maine
$50; $35 for MOFGA members

Please bring your own knife* and a bagged lunch

Bud grafting is a great way to start your own fruit trees and many ornamentals, using individual buds from this year’s new growth to graft onto rootstock already set in the nursery. Seth Yentes from North Branch Farm grafts thousands of trees every year, and will lead us in discussions on a wide range of topics essential for growing great nursery stock in Maine.

The class will begin with an introduction to growing nursery stock including soil preparation, planting, tree care, pest and disease management, and grafting. All major tree fruit species will be covered. Seth will also touch on proper handling of barefoot trees, pruning, winter care and more. After lunch we will go into the nursery and participants can practice bud grafting themselves under Seth's direction.

Participants should bring a bagged lunch, as well as a knife. (*Grafting knives are available from Fedco Seeds. The ideal bud grafting knife is this one. Other grafting knives will work but are not as perfect for the task.)
