Breeding Sheep for Wool Production

Monday, September 30, 2019

5:30 p.m. tour; 6 p.m. discussion

As concern grows for plastic waste in our wearables and home goods, and awareness expands for the opportunities regenerative agriculture offers as a global climate solution, it is time for us to think more critically about Farm to Textile as we have Farm to Table. Sheep and wool offer us all better ways to integrate with a carbon cycle that lowers our footprint in product substitute, lowers emissions in production and manufacturing, fertilizes as it goes!, and is completely renewable and biodegradable. The downside of wool is that many consumers find it uncomfortable near the skin. Nanne Kennedy of Meadowcroft Farm has been growing fine, no itch apparel wool since 1991 (not meat, dairy or carpet breeds). The downside of fine wool is relatively lighter weight fleeces (4-6 lbs). The only Polwarth breeder on the continent, genetics were imported in 2017 for laparoscopic breeding to double and eventually triple this avg. weight, with HIGH hopes of helping to reseed the US wool industry. Home to Seacolors Yarnery, selling small batch yarns, one of a kind sweaters and limited edition blankets, all yarns are solar dyed in seawater with food grade dyes and acids, creating feasibility for a closed loop system where waste is recovered and used for irrigation.
