Organic and Sustainable Agriculture News
For cereal, natural may not be as natural as you think
Portland Press Herald - 11/16/2011.
By Avery Yale Kamila – The word "natural" is a favorite among food marketers. Unfortunately, the term is totally meaningless and, according to a recent report, often deceptive. The Cornucopia Institute, a nonprofit research organization focused on sustainable and organic farming, released a report last month titled "Cereal Crimes: How 'Natural' Claims Deceive Consumers and Undermine the Organic Label – A Look Down the Cereal and Granola Aisle."
It’s time for a better federal chemical safety law
Bangor Daily News - 11/15/2011.
Editorial – When Maine lawmakers several years ago considered banning some chemicals deemed harmful to health that were used in products sold here, one of the first arguments made in opposition was that such action would result in a patchwork quilt of regulations among the 50 states.
The Organic Center’s new dietary risk index
Organic Consumers - 11/15/2011.
The Organic Center – It is easier to reduce pesticide risk in food when you know where it lurks. Our "Dietary Risk Index" confirms that organic foods deliver on a core promise – nearly eliminating pesticide dietary risks.
A local food blueprint
Grist - 11/15/2011.
By Tom Laskawy – The most exciting aspect of the new USDA report on the local food and farm economy isn't the sizable $4.8 billion in annual sales of local food it says occurred in 2008. It's the fact that, as the AP noted, the local food economy is poised to grow as fast as even the most optimistic estimates.
