Organic and Sustainable Agriculture News
Benton Falls man wins Common Ground Country Fair poster contest
Kennebec Journal - 6/1/2017.
Dwight Gagnon, of Benton Falls, was named the winner of the 2017 Common Ground Country Fair poster contest. This was the fifth time in the last seven years he had entered the contest. MOFGA’s 41st annual Common Ground Country Fair will be held Sept. 22-24 on MOFGA’s grounds in Unity.
237 acres in Windsor will remain in farming
Maine Farmland Trust - 6/1/2017.
On May 12, the Nate Clark and Katie Webb-Clark purchased the 237-acre Reed Farm in Windsor, where they will operate an organic dairy. MFT simultaneously purchased a conservation easement on the property, making the farm more affordable for the oncoming farmers, and ensuring that the land will be forever available for farming. The farm was previously owned by the late Dan Tibbets, a passionate farmer who was featured in MFT's Meet Your Farmer film in 2010. Nate and Katie plan to milk about 40 cows, and have a contract with Organic Valley. Katie works as MOFGA's Organic Dairy Certification Specialist, and her family has been farming for multiple generations, currently operating Webb Family Farm in Pittston.
The Fragrance of a New Pesticide
USDA - 6/1/2017.
By J. Kim Kaplan - You probably know methyl benzoate when you smell it. The natural compound’s wintergreen-spicy, floral-fruity aromas make it a popular ingredient in perfumes, soaps, and shampoos.
Plowing New Ground
Maine - 6/1/2017.
By Philip Conkling - Several two-lane blacktop roads wind through the small towns of Alna, Whitefield, and Windsor along some of Maine’s most attractive and productive farmlands. You might decide to explore these byways for no other reason than to enjoy an unforgettable farm-fresh meal at Sheepscot General in North Whitefield. My destination, however, is a half-mile farther down the road: a small sheep and goat farm, Fuzzy Udder Creamery, where I am to meet the proprietor, Jessie Dowling.
