Maine newspapers support LD 718

Bangor Daily News: Give consumers a choice and label genetically modified foods

"LD 718, sponsored by Rep. Lance Harvell, R-Farmington, and co-sponsored by 123 Republicans, Democrats and independents, would require that foods containing genetically modified organisms be labeled as such. It should pass." Read the full editorial

Portland Press Herald: Legislature should pass GMO labeling bill

"Consumers have a right to know whether their food has genetically engineered ingredients. Free markets work best when consumers have what they need to make informed choices. That is the concept behind L.D. 718, the genetically modified organism labeling bill now before the Legislature. That is also the reason that lawmakers should pass this law this year." Organic and Sustainable Agriculture News
Canadian scholars have plan to limit methane gas output from belching bovine
National Post [Canada] - 5/15/2009.
Canwest News Service – It's the climate-change culprit nobody wants to talk about: cattle gas. Much of the methane emitted in Canada comes not from the oil industry or landfills, but from belching cows. Now, a team of Canadian scholars says it has come up with a plan to cut a cow's output by as much as 25%, by making the animal "more efficient."
The ugly truth behind organic food
Alternet - 5/14/2009.
By Sarah Newman – Plenty of people, including me, prefer organic produce because it is healthier and safer. But this certification does nothing to ensure that it was produced with sustainable agricultural practices.
Livestock expo expands locally
Kennebec Journal - 5/14/2009.
By Mechele Cooper – Paul Randall pulled his camper in to the Windsor Fairgrounds Wednesday morning. The Pownal cattle farmer came early to set up for the Northeast Livestock Expo scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Best of the best (Rob Evans & Hugo’s)
Portland Press Herald - 5/13/2009.
By Meredith Goad – When I dropped by to visit with Rob Evans last week, he was chatting on his cell phone with his biggest fan – his mom. She was the first person he called from the Lincoln Center after he won the James Beard Foundation's award for Best Chef: Northeast last week in New York. "She said, 'You don't need my approval anymore,' " Evans said. Hugo's, the Middle Street restaurant owned by the 45-year-old Evans and his wife and business partner Nancy Pugh, probably will be tough to get into in the coming weeks, at least on the weekends.
