Maine newspapers support LD 718

Bangor Daily News: Give consumers a choice and label genetically modified foods

"LD 718, sponsored by Rep. Lance Harvell, R-Farmington, and co-sponsored by 123 Republicans, Democrats and independents, would require that foods containing genetically modified organisms be labeled as such. It should pass." Read the full editorial

Portland Press Herald: Legislature should pass GMO labeling bill

"Consumers have a right to know whether their food has genetically engineered ingredients. Free markets work best when consumers have what they need to make informed choices. That is the concept behind L.D. 718, the genetically modified organism labeling bill now before the Legislature. That is also the reason that lawmakers should pass this law this year." Organic and Sustainable Agriculture News
Veteran plant-eater happily endorses veggie chic
Portland Press Herald - 8/19/2009.
By Avery Yale Kamila – My mother blames my eating habits on my organic-farm-girl childhood and, in particular, a pet pig who made an appearance on the dinner table as a pork chop. Others cite my short stint as a Burger King cashier. Personally, I trace my dietary preferences to a speech about animal testing and cosmetics I delivered during my sophomore year of high school. Whatever the cause, the end result is the same: These days, I do my best to keep animal products off my plate.
Rising rate of obesity endangers health reform
Kennebec Journal - 8/19/2009.
Op-ed By Dr. Wendy Wolf – ... The increasing rate of obesity in children and adults (including the elderly) and the parallel growth in chronic diseases related to obesity including heart disease, diabetes, arthritis and some forms of cancer deserve as much attention as any other wide-spread epidemic.
Close to home: gardeners keep it in the family
Portland Press Herald - 8/19/2009.
By Amy Martin – Gardening isn't just in the ground. It's in the blood. Kay Doucette traces her gardening skills back to her mother. "My parents made us work in the garden, and I hated every minute of it, or so I thought," she said. Doucette tied for the first-place Green Thumb award with Jack Doherty last month. The Scarborough Garden Club hosted the annual contest, in which gardens are nominated and judged by a panel of club members.
A pleasant surprise
Bangor Daily News - 8/19/2009.
By Jessica Bloch – Cafe Sorpreso is exactly what its name suggests. It’s a surprise and a pleasant one, from its downtown Presque Isle location to its ever-changing menu filled with fresh produce, made-from-scratch bread and homemade desserts to its accommodating owner-chefs.
