Pesticides linked to bee decline for first time in a countrywide field study
The Guardian [UK] - 8/20/2015.
By Alison Benjamin - Landscape-wide research by former UK government agency on oilseed rape fields in England and Wales shows link between neonicotinoids and honeybee colony losses.
The EPA Doesn't Know How to Deal With 300 Million Tons of Animal Poop
Bloomberg - 8/20/2015.
By Mark Drajem - Rene Miller grew up on a seven-acre slip of Duplin County, N.C., where her mother, Daisy, raised corn, chickens, and hogs. Now, what was a neighbor’s tobacco farm across the narrow two-lane road is a field where a giant sprinkler sprays waste from an industrial hog-raising operation onto whatever happens to be planted there – corn, hay, soybeans. The force of the liquefied manure is so strong it splatters the street sign Miller installed to mark Daisy Miller Lane. “I can’t go out in my yard to watch the cars go by. I can’t put my clothes out on the line,” she says. “It stinks.”
A Franken-Sized Salmon?
Food & Water Watch - 8/19/2015.
By Tim Schwab - Beyond being designed and engineered by humans and created in a laboratory, GMO salmon and Frankenstein’s monster may also share another defining feature – larger-than-normal proportions. AquaBounty Technologies, the company behind GMO salmon, has always insisted that its fish grow much faster than normal Atlantic salmon – but not larger. But, according to a recently released scientific review from the Canadian government, AquaBounty doesn’t have a shred of evidence supporting this claim.
Big Food is Spending Millions to Lobby for Less Transparency
Civil Eats - 8/19/2015.
By Elizabeth Grossman - From GMO labeling to pesticides to the source of the meat you buy, a handful of companies are spending heavily to keep information off your food labels.
