Know Your Organic Producers!

Meet Gina Hancock of MOFGA-certified organic Hancock Family Farm in Casco, Maine. The Hancocks (Gina, Geof and their two daughters) grow vegetables, vegetable seedlings, cut flowers and herbs, which they sell through their own farm stand, at the Bridgton and Kennebunk farmers’ markets and through their community supported agriculture program. "We believe that building and tending quality soil will translate into healthy, nutritious vegetables; that livestock deserves respectful handling and the opportunity to live out their lives on pasture; and that great farming doesn't happen without community," say the Hancocks. Honey laundering: tainted and counterfeit Chinese honey floods into the US
Grist - 8/18/2011.
By Tom Laskawy – If it's possible to write a blockbuster story about honey, Food Safety News has done it: "A third or more of all the honey consumed in the U.S. is likely to have been smuggled in from China and may be tainted with illegal antibiotics and heavy metals. A Food Safety News investigation has documented that millions of pounds of honey banned as unsafe in dozens of countries are being imported and sold here in record quantities."
Politics, farmers and change: the end of rural America
Huffington Post - 8/17/2011.
By Dave Murphy – This week President Obama returned to Iowa, where he launched his successful bid to the White House, to speak about "jobs and economic security" in rural America. For farmers and rural advocates this tour is really about something much larger than electioneering or a new jobs program, it's about the survival of rural America.
379 years later, time for some new farming blood
Kennebec Journal - 8/16/2011.
By Kathy McCormack – Dover, N.H.: It's a good season for the beloved sweet corn on the 379-year-old Tuttle Farm. It also looks good for the crops that weren't there a year ago, produced by a group of visiting young farmers – eggplant, peppers, pumpkins and sunflowers.
Wet summer could spell potato blight
Kennebec Journal - 8/16/2011.
AP – Exeter: Maine potato farmers could be facing potato blight because of the wet summer. The Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association says three farms along the state's central coast have "suspicious" crops. In a new report, the group said heavy rain could mean trouble for potato farmers in Aroostook County and the central coast.
