"We need to wean the American food system off its heavy 20th-century diet of fossil fuel and put it back on a diet of contemporary sunshine."
- Michael Pollan

Time is short for USDA to flex its antitrust muscle with meat industry
Fern’s Ag Insider - 10/18/2016.
By Christopher Leonard - In the closing months of his tenure as U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack is making one last stab at being a trustbuster. Late last week, the USDA quietly moved forward with an effort to strengthen its antitrust authority over the handful of companies that dominate America’s meat system. The action raised hopes for advocates who have pushed for years to toughen antitrust laws, and it already has met resistance from meat companies and their lobbyists. What’s less clear is whether the action will have any meaningful impact. (subscription required)
National Food Policy Scorecard Measures Congress’ Performance on Major Food Issues
National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition - 10/17/2016.
Today, Food Policy Action (FPA) released its 2016 National Food Policy Scorecard (“Scorecard”), a unique and interactive tool to help the public understand how Congress members have performed (or underperformed) on food-related policy issues. FPA is a non-profit organization headed by co-founders Ken Cook (also of the Environmental Working Group) and Chef Tom Colicchio, which endeavors to educate the public on how their Congress members are working towards or against achieving good food policy.
Horse-powered farms aren’t old-fashioned anymore
Portland Press Herald - 10/16/2016.
By Mary Pols - Lizzy Koltai recently relocated Helios, her horse-powered farm, from leased land in Bowdoinham to her own land in Gouldsboro. While she prepares long-fallow agricultural fields there for cultivation, she’s taken another job to generate income on a nearby farm – a typical move for a new farmer. She sometimes drives a tractor on that farm, and you might think she’d be happy to get a chance to zip through plowing duties on mechanized equipment. Not so.
