Young Dairy Farmers: The Milkhouse
Maine Farmland Trust - 7/14/2016.
By Jenny Nelson - Caitlin Frame, her partner Andy and their son Linus own and operate The Milkhouse, a certified organic farm and creamery in Monmouth, where they produce milk and yogurt, as well as pork, beef, and eggs. They sell their bottled milk and yogurt to stores across the state, have a farmstand in their barn, and sell fluid milk to Horizon Organic.
Americans Are Buying Gene-Edited Food That's Not Labeled GMO
Bloomberg - 7/14/2016.
By Craig Giammona, Jack Kaskey - Food companies are now required to label GMOs in Vermont, and debate is raging over a federal standard. But so far, regulators at the U.S. Department of Agriculture have taken a pass on overseeing gene-edited crops. They say cutting DNA from a plant is not the same as adding genes from another organism. So corn injected with outside DNA is classified a genetically modified organism, but canola that can tolerate herbicide because scientists removed a gene is not.
Obama Expected to Sign Industry-Backed GMO Label Bill Into Law
EcoWatch - 7/14/2016.
By Lorraine Chow - The U.S. House of Representatives passed the bill by a 306-117 vote Thursday. The bill now heads to President Obama's desk. Looks like we're finally getting GMO labels on food products – just not the kind you can actually read.
FDA Final Rule Provides Needed Clarity for Local Food Producers
National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition - 7/13/2016.
The National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition (NSAC) welcomes the issuance of the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) final rule amending the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) requirements for food facility registration. The local and regional farm and food community has long awaited this final rule, which provides much-needed clarity for direct marketing farms and food enterprises, preventing undue regulation of these businesses.
