Organic and Sustainable Agriculture News
Is Junk Food Biologically Addictive?
Organic Connections - 1/29/2014.
By Mark Hyman, M.D. - Our government and the food industry both encourage more “personal responsibility” when it comes to battling the obesity epidemic and its associated diseases. They say people should exercise more self-control, make better choices, avoid over-eating, and reduce their intake of sugar-sweetened drinks and processed food.
Organic Farmer Going to Court Against Monsanto’s GM Crops
Care2 - 1/29/2014.
By Kristina Chew - You may not have heard of Steve Marsh yet, but this Australian farmer could lose everything to protect your right to eat GM-free food.
House-approved farm bill has wins, losses for Maine
Portland Press Herald - 1/29/2014.
By Kevin Miller - Washington: After years of delay, the U.S. House passed a nearly $1 trillion farm bill Wednesday that would help many Maine farmers, but could cut food stamp benefits for as many as 10,000 state residents. Some Democrats were unhappy with the $800 million-per-year reduction in food stamp funding contained in the bill, but that cut was only 20 percent of the reduction originally sought by House Republicans.
Farm-to-school: Portland on pace to double amount of local produce, meats served in schools
Bangor Daily News - 1/29/2014.
By Ben McCanna, The Forecaster - Portland: While high-end restaurants on the peninsula clamor for farm-to-table cred, a lesser-known kitchen on the city’s outskirts may be poised to outdo them. Call it the farm-to-school movement.
