"We need to wean the American food system off its heavy 20th-century diet of fossil fuel and put it back on a diet of contemporary sunshine."
- Michael Pollan

Seed Swap and Scion Exchange

Sunday, March 25
MOFGA's Common Ground Education Center, Unity

FREE, no registration required

For gardeners and orchardists, it's the most wonderful flea market in the world. Not only that – most of the best stuff is free!

MOFGA, the Maine Tree Crop Alliance, and Fedco will once again host the Seed Swap and Scionwood Exchange at MOFGA’s Common Ground Exhibition Hall in Unity.

Please bring any seeds, scionwood or cuttings you have to share freely with others. In recent years we have given away scionwood from well over 200 fruit varieties. These contributions make the day a success. If you don't have seeds or scionwood to share, don't fret and join us anyways – maybe bring some baked goods or fertile hatching eggs instead!

We’ll supply labels, tape and markers, and we’ll be selling T-shirts, books, grafting supplies and rootstock.

Admission is free. Information and schedule of activities

San Francisco Chronicle - 8/15/2014.
By Bob Egelko - A federal magistrate has dismissed most of a lawsuit by environmental advocates challenging the government's approval of numerous pesticides, but said they can pursue claims that federal officials allowed 11 chemicals on the market without getting up-to-date information about hazards to endangered species.
Blueberry processing resumes at former Coastal Farms facility
Penobscot Bay Pilot - 8/14/2014.
By Ethan Andrews - Blueberry juice. On Tuesday, telltale beads of the stuff trickled from under a garage door into the parking lot next to the Coastal Farms and Foods building on Route 1. Nearer to the entrance, forklift wheels had smeared the juice into a gray hatch. Across the parking lot, a tower of pristine wooden pallets stood near a tractor trailer with Newfoundland/Labrador plates.
New Local and Regional Food Data Available from USDA Market News
National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition - 8/13/2014.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)’s Agriculture Marketing Service (AMS) recently announced that its free online Market News service will now include reports on local and regional food markets. These reports, which are currently limited to a small number of states with more states expected to be added in the coming year, provide pricing and volume information to help producers tap into a growing $7 billion a year local and regional food market. The reports also allow farmers to develop more comprehensive business plans, thus improving their chances of obtaining financing and insurance products from USDA, local banks, and local businesses.
Soup to Nuts: Going with the local grain
Portland Press Herald - 8/13/2014.
By Meredith Goad - As Maine farmers grow more grains, and millers process them, bakeries are using the local flours to make pastries and breads more nutritious and flavorful.
