North Branch Farm, Monroe, Maine
Fee: $50 non-members; $45 Student/Apprentice; $35 members; Journeypersons free

Bud grafting is a great way to start your own fruit trees as well as many ornamentals. "Budding" uses individual buds from this year’s new growth to graft onto rootstock already set in the nursery. The workshop will be taught by Seth Yentes at North Branch Farm. Seth grafts thousands of trees every year. All the major tree fruit species will be covered. MOFGA will supply the buds and the rootstock. Participants should bring their own knives as well as a bag lunch.

5 Labor Saving Tips for the Lazivore Gardener
Treehugger - 7/25/2013.
By Sami Grover - Some time ago, I wrote a Lazivore Manifesto—a thinly-veiled self justification for the fact that while I like home grown produce, I really don't like doing too much work to get it. After years of over reach and under achievement, I am finally achieving some success with my gardening efforts. So I thought I'd run through a few techniques that can help fellow lazivores to grow more while doing less.
Using DNA Sequencing to Show Why Crop Rotation Works
Modern Farmer - 7/25/2013.
By Gloria Dawson - Crop rotation just plain works. Since as far back as the Roman Empire farmers have known this. When crops are rotated, plant nutrition and yield improves, and farmers have more control over the spread of disease. But after all this time, we still don’t know why this happens. A new study in The ISME Journal helps reveal the answer.
Tom's Kitchen: Gazpacho for a Hot Summer
Mother Jones - 7/25/2013.
By Tom Philpott - Much of the East Coast has been gripped by a brutal heat wave. Here in Austin, we call such weather "summer." It's the time of year when I grope for ways to feed myself while applying as little heat as possible. And one of my go-to hot-weather dishes in gazpacho, the iconic tomato-based raw soup of Spain.
The Bad Seed: The Health Risks of Genetically Modified Corn
Elle - 7/24/2013.
By Caitlin Shetterly - With symptoms including headaches, nausea, rashes, and fatigue, Caitlin Shetterly visited doctor after doctor searching for a cure for what ailed her. What she found, after years of misery and bafflement, was as unlikely as it was utterly common.
