Organic Orcharding Workshop:
Pruning Fruit Trees

Designed for beginner to intermediate orchardists managing backyard plantings to larger orchards. Learn to prune fruit trees to encourage vigorous growth, heavy fruit set, and quality fruit yield. Scionwood collection and storage will also be covered. Confirmation and directions will be sent a week prior to the start of the workshop. Please keep in mind that pre-registration and payment are required and this course fills up quickly!

Boothby's Orchard and Farm taking part in Bangor's Beer Fest

The Greater Bangor Convention and Visitors Bureau has announced the 3rd annual Bangor’s Beer Festival, Tap Into Summer will take place on Saturday, June 20 on the Bangor Waterfront. This year, Bangor’s Beer Festival will debut a companion festival, Wine on the Waterfront, which will take place the night before the beer fest.
USDA Draft Rule would continue to allow million dollar subsidy payments to mega-farms
National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition - 5/27/2015.
The National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition (NSAC) urged the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to undertake a major overhaul of its “actively engaged in farming” draft rule to create fair and effective limitations on the subsidies taxpayers provide to commodity farms. Fair and effective enforcement of the farm bill’s payment limitations would aid family farmers, remove barriers to new farming opportunities for young farmers, improve the vibrancy of the rural economy, and save the taxpayers money.
FDA Rule on Food Animal Antibiotic Use Data Now Open for Comment
National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition - 5/27/2015.
On May 19, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a proposed rule that will enable more detailed data collection on antibiotic use in livestock production in the United States. This rule would require drug companies to obtain and report estimates of sales by major food producing species – namely cattle, chickens, turkeys, and pigs. The additional information from drug companies is intended to allow the FDA to help ensure the proper use of these medically important antibiotics.
‘Ban this hazardous herbicide’

By Charles Chiam - Sri Lanka has banned the use of the herbicide glyphosate, and Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) wants Malaysia to follow suit.
