Volunteers' Earth Day Cleanup Day at MOFGA's Common Ground Education Center
Saturday, April 19

The Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA) will host an Earth Day Cleanup Day with volunteers at MOFGA's Common Ground Education Center in Unity, Maine, on Saturday, April 19, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Celebrate Earth Day by helping us prepare our grounds for the upcoming growing season. Volunteers receive a hearty lunch and a free T-shirt.

Depending on the weather, volunteers may be cleaning, raking and mulching gardens, screening compost for use on the grounds, doing light carpentry, helping our Low-Impact Forestry Committee with its work in the woods ... or helping with other projects.

For more information or to RSVP for the workday, please contact our volunteer coordinator, Anna Libby, at alibby@mofga.org or 568-4142. MOFGA's Common Ground Education Center is located in Unity, Maine, on the Crosby Brook Road, off Routes 139/220.

Organic and Sustainable Agriculture News
You’re Eating Toxic Chemicals, Even If You Eat Organic And Avoid Plastic
Fast Company - 2/27/2013.
By Ariel Schwartz - Ten families were divided into two groups. One was given instructions for avoiding foods with BPA and phthalates - i.e., to avoid canned foods; the other ate catered meals prepared with many local and organic ingredients. Urinary BPA and phthalate levels in the first group remained the same, but those in the second group spiked due to contamination in milk (even though it was in glass bottles), cream and organic (nonlocal) ground coriander.
Maintaining Maine’s scallop fishery
Bangor Daily News - 2/27/2013.
OpEd by Robin Alden - The first year of Maine’s new scallop management is a success story far beyond its economic metrics: landings that will be reported at this week’s Maine Fishermen’s Forum in Rockport will show substantial landings, possibly headed for a season high relative to the recent decade.
Our New Favorite Breakfast: Shirred Eggs
Bangor Daily News - 2/27/2013.
By Sandy Oliver - Strictly speaking, shirred eggs are a form of baked eggs; the French call it oeufs en cocotte and instead of a cocotte, or casserole, we do them in glass custard cups set in a pan of hot water, often with a lid on it. The process is simple, though simple does not necessarily translate into easy.
The Maine Ingredient: Recipes reflect Maine food history
Portland Press Herald - 2/27/2013.
By Brooke Dojny - Aren't we lucky to have Sandra Oliver, who is one of the country's pre-eminent food historians, living right here in Maine – on Islesboro, as a matter of fact? Although she researches and writes about all aspects of American food history, residence here in our part of the world means that she naturally focuses much of her attention on Maine foodways.
